§ THE PLEDGE

Four commitments.

Scientific principles for the restoration of the night sky.

01 SHIELD

Install full-cutoff fixtures. Direct light downward to keep the beam on the ground and off the stars.

Direct light is the enemy of the night.

02 WARMTH

Choose bulbs under 3000K. Warm amber tones preserve the natural rhythm of the nocturnal world.

Blue light scatters in the atmosphere.

03 TIMING

Use motion sensors and timers. Light only when needed so the darkness returns the moment you leave.

Light is a pollutant when unused.

04 FOCUS

Dim your exterior lighting. Light only what is needed to ensure the sky remains a canvas for the stars.

Excessive brightness creates glare.

05 SHIELDING

Use opaque covers on lamps. Block the upward spill to prevent the glow from reaching the horizon.

Reflected light is still light.

06 ADVOCACY

Talk to your neighbors today. The sky belongs to all when we collectively choose to dim our homes.

The night is a shared resource.

§ 04 — THE PLEDGE

Four commitments to the night.

01 Shield what you light. 02 Use warm light. 03 Light only when needed. 04 Light only what's needed.
